“He played like Wayne Carey": Lyon and Watson's player of the round

2020-07-06T08:48+10:00

Garry Lyon and Tim Watson have named their players of the round from the weekend, with both picking key forwards.

Lyon, a five-time All-Australian forward himself, loved what he saw from Brisbane’s Daniel McStay against Port Adelaide.

The 25-year-old took eight marks in the win, five of them contested, three inside 50, and kicked one goal.

“He played like Wayne Carey, Daniel McStay,” Lyon told SEN Breakfast.

“This bloke has got, I said this last year after he played a similar game, he is so much better than he thinks he is.

“If he only realised how much talent he’s got Daniel McStay, he could be something very, very special. He was my player of the round.

“These blokes, McStay, Esava Ratugolea, have ability that make you go ‘wow’, then you don’t see them do it again for a long time.”

Watson agreed, saying players like McStay and Ratugolea – who took a number of huge marks against Gold Coast himself – need greater confidence in themselves.

“McStay has got to become McGo. He looks like he should be so much better than he us – almost like he’s embarrassed to be better than what he is. Hopefully that unlocked him on the weekend,” he said.

Watson’s player of the weekend was Josh Bruce, who booted six goals and stood up in the absence of Aaron Naughton and Sam Lloyd for the Western Bulldogs.

“Bruce kicking the six goals, we rarely see anyone kicking a handful of goals anymore,” he said.

“There were real question marks as a player as to whether he was going to be able to perform the way they desperately need someone in a key forward post to perform.

“There was no one that sort of stood out on the weekend with a superstar performance so that was a positive performance.”
