Hawks explain timeline of bizarre Jon Patton injury

2020-07-08T09:32+10:00

Hawthorn forward Jon Patton has now missed two games due to an infected burn on his foot.

The former number one draft pick spilled hot oil on his foot heading into Round 4, a burn that later became infected and led to him missing the North Melbourne game.

He was included in the team to play GWS, but the club felt a lack of training caused by the foot injury meant it was best to withdraw him late.

Hawthorn’s Graham Wright explained the bizarre injury’s timeline.

“He spilt some oil on his foot at home which I think was either Monday night or Tuesday night and he trained on the Wednesday so we had no knowledge there was any issue with his foot,” he told SEN’s Dwayne’s World.

“It wasn’t something our medical team thought we needed to know because he was actually able to train and get through without issue.

“He presented on Friday with some redness and infection had got into the foot and he was quite sore Friday.

“They obviously treated him Friday hoping he’d be able to get through the captain’s run on Saturday morning.

“From that perspective he trained on Saturday morning, tried to get through, wasn’t quite at the level and the guys decided to rule him out of the game.

“There’s no major issue with it, but he wasn’t going to be right to perform in the North Melbourne game so we left him out.”
