“Already built like a man”: Port Adelaide NGA prospect impressing at SANFL level

Port Adelaide Next Generation Academy prospect Lachie Jones has impressed Woodville-West Torrens coach Jade Sheedy in his two senior outings as an Eagle.

Speaking on SEN SA Breakfast with Kane Cornes and Andrew Hayes, Sheedy says Jones is an exciting prospect who doesn’t look out of place at SANFL senior level.

“Young Lachie Jones is playing with us at the moment, he’s still eligible for under 18s. He’s played the first two games at league level and he’s a ripper,” he said.

“He’s a defender who can play tall and small. He’d be 187cm and already built like a man.

“He’s actually in Port Adelaide’s NGA academy so I’m sure that they will take him.”

Jones’ indigenous background allows Port Adelaide first access to the potential top 20 pick.

In his first season as Eagles coach, Sheedy also singled out Caleb Poulter as a young player with potential.

“Also young Caleb Poulter who’s playing in the under 18s at the moment, he’s having a really strong year,” Sheedy said.

“He’s shown a lot of promise and trained with us throughout the pre-season.

“He’s a really dynamic and flexible player, he’s a 190cm midfielder and they’re all the rage now obviously so he’s got plenty of class.”

Sheedy also nominated Lachie McNeil and James Rowe as talents AFL clubs should keep an eye on.

“Young Lachie McNeil I think could still get drafted, he’s playing with us at the moment,” he said.

“He’s started the first couple of games in the league, he was under 18s last year and he’s had a really good start.

“There’s still kids like James Rowe who you coach and see some of the things he does on gameday.

“I know there’s a few knocks about him on leg speed but one thing you can’t teach kids these days is game awareness and he has plenty of that.”
