Hickmott with a host of winning chances at Gawler

2020-07-09T18:32+10:00

Trainer John Hickmott joined the SA Betfair Edge on SEN Track to chat about his runners at Gawler this Saturday.

Of his last 24 runners, the in-form Murray Bridge trainer has had just eight horses finish outside the top three so it’s safe to say his stable is in a rich vein of form.

Hickmott, who is sitting fifth in the South Australian premiership, also has a 22.8% winning strike rate at Gawler which lays further hope to the horses he has in at the venue this weekend.

Race 1
No.2 - War Cheval ($4.3)

“We’re going around in a race that we shouldn’t be but he’s going around anyway because he needs the run and then we can turn him out and give him a break.

“Some of the horse have more experience than him so they’ll be harder to beat but my horse goes well, by the same token.”

Race 5
No.4 - Flow Meter ($19)

“You can’t ever write old ‘Flowy’ off. We’ve thought of retiring him a number of times but when the float goes out he’s real cranky.

“His last run was enormous. He’s a marvel and he loves his job, he really does.”

Race 6
No.3 - Classy Joe ($5.3)

“Classy may not run. He’s drawn bad (barrier 13 of 13) and we’ll just see if there are any scratchings. He might go around next Wednesday.”

Race 7
No.1 - Crown Fontein ($12)

“Jess (Eaton) rode him the other morning.

“He had a throat operation since he won the big race in Swan Hill (in June 2019) and his first start back (on June 13 this year) was very credible so I’ll expect him to run a big race and with Jess’ two kilos (claim) it’ll be a big help.

“He does race forward. He won’t lead but he can be somewhere near them. He went better than expected (at Murray Bridge) after a layoff but we’ve got the second-up syndrome which is aways a worry.

“He’s working well, he’s eating well, he’s doing everything right so we just hope he can run well.”

Race 8
No.1 - Classy Jaybee ($4.5)
No.11 - Hobo Bob ($101)

“He’s (Classy Jaybee) a nice horse, he does everything right. I’d expect him to be pretty competitive on Saturday.

“He’s (Hobo Bob) coming over from the west coast and there’s no suitable races over there. He’ll always be reasonably competitive but I don’t think at this stage he’s ready to frighten those horses.”

Hickmott also has Frances Boy running in Race 9 at Caulfield, currently priced at around $8.5.

“There’s no easy races in Melbourne but he’s over there and he’ll be competitive because he’s very fit and up to the mile.

“I don’t think he’ll need to lead. I’ve been trying for him not to lead and the last quite a few starts he’s led in his races because he begins so well.

“He’ll get around Caulfield well and if he can be somewhere near the front bunch, it’ll be a bit heavy by the end of the day, and he can handle the wet so he’ll certainly be competitive.”
