Doubts raised over Giants' coaching methods

2020-07-19T15:40+10:00

Terry Wallace has called into question Leon Cameron’s coaching methods, saying the GWS Giants’ current issues stem from structural weakness.

Cameron's side have lost their last two matches, with their most recent defeat coming against Brisbane on Saturday.

Wallace said rather than blaming the midfield, Cameron’s coaching structures weren’t stacking up with the best sides in the competition.

“Leon Cameron says (the way they’re getting beaten) is the midfield not generating enough which is putting pressure on both ends,” he said on AFL Nation.

“But to me that’s coaching – their structures are nowhere near as advanced and as tight as some of the other sides are in the competition at the moment.”

Wallace questioned Cameron’s decision to play intercept defender Nick Haynes on small forward Charlie Cameron.

“Not a hope in hell I would’ve played Nick Haynes on Charlie Cameron,” Wallace said.

“I would’ve preferred to go with someone like an Aidan Corr – he’s got real genuine pace. They might’ve played Heath Shaw (on him) but I would’ve gone Corr. Haynes is the best intercept player in the AFL but what I would be wanting to do when you’ve got a player like Charlie Cameron down there is intercept the ball before it gets to time.

“What I think you need to be doing is cutting it off at the source and almost have Haynes on the least dangerous of the forwards and let him take his intercept makes.

“Haynes’ natural reaction is he wants to go towards the play and Cameron’s reaction is sneaking out the back.

“I didn’t work for them and I thought it was the wrong matchup.”
