Lewis slams "boring, easy to defend" Hawks

Hawthorn now sits 14th on the ladder having lost three games in a row.

They were blown out of the water by Melbourne on Sunday afternoon, losing by 43 points and never looking like getting near a Demons side that has also struggled for form this year.

Four-time premiership Hawk Jordan Lewis has slammed the club’s game style and puts equal blame on both coach Alastair Clarkson and the playing group.

“It was a really disappointing performance yesterday,” he told SEN Breakfast.

“Melbourne, to their credit, were really good, but Hawthorn for me, they just offered nothing offensively.

“Sometimes you wonder whether that’s a coaching instruction or whether that’s just a player’s ability to pick through their opponent.

“I just thought on countless occasions yesterday it was just slow, boring, they lost the contested stuff around the ball, but when they won it back in their back half their decision to go sideways and long down the line was a real mistake by Hawthorn.

“You’ve got to really put it back onto the players. I always think there’s only so much a coach can do. You have to have the talent out on the field and players who are making really good decisions.

“Yes, Alastair Clarkson has to take some responsibility for the performance yesterday, but so do the players.

“On countless occasions there were skill errors and on occasions it was their decisions that got them in trouble. So there’s a bit of blame on both there.

“To get out of this form slump you’ve got to change things up and to me the glaring thing from yesterday was yes, they’ve never been good at contested possessions, but their transition from the back half of the ground has always kept them in good stead.

“For me yesterday it was boring, easy to defend and Melbourne just set up on the back of that on countless occasions.”

Hawthorn takes on Sydney at the SCG in Round 8 before heading over to Western Australia for three weeks in quarantine.
