Lloyd names the four Giants who they can’t afford to lose and who is "expendable"

2020-07-28T13:46+10:00

Matthew Lloyd has named the four GWS players who he believes are untouchable.

Sportsday co-host Sam McClure asked Lloyd to name the four players out of Toby Greene, Stephen Coniglio, Lachie Whitfield, Jeremy Cameron, Zac Williams and Josh Kelly the Giants should keep if they’re forced to choose due to a reported salary cap squeeze at the club.

“Toby Greene is number one as he’s untouchable,” Lloyd said on Sportsday.

“He’s not playing that well, but he’s the captain and just signed a seven-year deal so you can’t trade Stephen Coniglio. Those are the two safest.

“I’d have Lachie Whitfield as the second safest of those players, Jeremy Cameron is a key forward so he differentiates himself.

Lloyd explained the reasons behind his decision not to include rebounding defender Zac Williams and midfielder Josh Kelly in his list of players to keep.

“Zac Williams is an expendable player and is out of contract,” he said.

“I love Josh Kelly but it’s like when you lose Dylan Shiel and those types, sometimes you’ve had to let them go.

“(Tim) Taranto comes back and wins the best and fairest, Jacob Hopper (is there), Jackson Hately is coming through but it would be a massive loss (to lose Kelly) for them.

“I’d hate to lose Josh Kelly but that’s just the situation they’re in.”
