"He's an idiot": Hawthorn great slams Don Scott salary cap claims

2020-07-30T16:40+10:00

Hawthorn great Dermott Brereton has slammed Don Scott’s claims the club cheated the salary cap in the 1980s and and early 1990s, labelling him “an idiot”.

Scott made the inflammatory claims on the new ‘No Merger’ podcast, saying the Hawks were “contravening the salary cap".

Brereton didn’t hold back when asked about his views of Scott, saying he was like a “fly in the ointment” when he served on the Hawthorn board.

“Don suffers from a classic symptom of men in their 70s … he’s an idiot,” he said on SEN’s Bob and Andy.

“I served on the board with him, Don would like things to be about him and he’d like to think everyone believes that he was the man who saved Hawthorn, he did that by tearing some strips off a hybrid jumper between Melbourne and Hawthorn. Ian Dicker (former Hawks president) is the man that saved Hawthorn.

“The night when Don went on the board, we spent most of the time thereafter trying to get him off the board. He is a fly in the ointment and he’s continuing to be.

“Don should be behind glass at Hawthorn’s Hall of Fame out at Waverley and there should be a little hammer next to it and it should say, ‘break in case of emergency’.

"That’s where Don should be at the moment.”

Scott captained Hawthorn to two VFL premierships in 1976 and 1978 while Brereton was part of five AFL/VFL premierships at the club between 1983 and 1991.
