Eagles swoop late to defeat the Cats

2020-08-01T23:00+10:00

A spirited West Coast Eagles outfit came from behind to register their fifth consecutive victory, defeating Geelong by nine points at Optus Stadium.

In front of a vocal home crowd, the Eagles became only the second team to trail at three-quarter time and go onto win in season 2020.

West Coast then stormed home, kicking four goals to one in the final term, taking the lead at the 10-minute mark and not letting go.

Three-time All Australian Josh Kennedy kicked four goals, taking the lead in the Coleman Medal race as he spearheaded the Eagles to victory.

Dom Sheed also led the way for the home side with two goals and 24 disposals.

Zach Tuohy and Tom Hawkins kicked two goals each for the Cats while Cam Guthrie recorded 23 disposals, the most for the away side.

Here’s everything you need to know!

The Talking Point: Tim Kelly

The man who left Geelong at the end of last season faced his old side for the first time. The 2019 All Australian didn’t hit the scoreboard but was a solid contributor, notching up 23 disposals (equal second-most on the ground) along with five clearances. The. 26-year old told the host broadcaster post-match that he expects to meet the Cats once again come the pointy end of the season.

West Coast's home advantage:

While the Eagles had the advantage of a home crowd in their smashing of Collingwood last week, it could be argued the notoriously loud West Coast faithful played their part in willing their team to victory tonight. The home crowd advantage is unique in 2020 and with Optus Stadium currently allowing the most amount of fans into a stadium, it's a big advantage for the Eagles. Already on a five-match winning streak and with at least their next two matches locked in for Optus, they're going to be tough to beat for the rest of the season.

What’s next?

Geelong host North Melbourne at the Gabba on Wednesday night before taking on St Kilda the following Monday. West Coast have the bye in round 10 before hosting Carlton next Sunday at Optus Stadium.
