2020 AFLW Trade Period tracker and analysis

The AFLW trade period is underway and movement across the board is expected, given the majority of players are on one-year contracts.

All 14 teams can sign up to 27 players by the conclusion of the sign and trade period on August 12th.

Here, we will be keeping track of every trade made:

Trade 1

Carlton trades Sarah Hosking to Richmond for Pick 15

Analysis: Richmond gets exactly what they need here. A quality, experienced midfielder who can provide pace on the outside or go on-ball if required. Hosking took a slightly lesser role with the Blues in 2019 with the likes of Grace Egan, Chloe Dalton, Georgia Gee and Lucy McEvoy all having breakout years. The Blues now hold the seventh and ninth picks in the Victorian trade pool, which will be handy for moves across the trade period.

Trade 2

Richmond trades Grace Campbell to North Melbourne for Pick 43

Analysis: North Melbourne didn’t exactly have to add to their midfield depth, boasting four elite on-ballers and a number of others who can rotate through there. Getting Campbell through the door is a nice addition as a contested, on-ball midfielder. Richmond losing midfield depth is the furthest thing from ideal, even with the addition of Sarah Hosking.

Trade 3

North Melbourne trades Abbey Green to Collingwood for Pick 40

Analysis: With Eliza Hynes retired, Collingwood gets their hands on some ruck depth behind Sharni Layton. Green played two games for North Melbourne in her debut season, but was stuck behind Emma King, Vivien Saad and Kate Gillespie-Jones on their ruck depth chart.

Trade 4

Carlton trades Jayde Van Dyk and pick 42 to St Kilda__ for Pick 36

St Kilda gets their hands on a talented defender capable of taking smalls and talls and it only cost them a third-round pick upgrade. Van Dyk injured her foot in the warm up of Round 1, but still played out the game and took care of Sabrina Frederick. She couldn’t work her way back into a settled Blues side late in the season, but she will fit seamlessly into this Saints backline and be a key part of their 2021 side.
