North Melbourne lose star forward to injury as Geelong cruise to victory

2020-08-05T20:00+10:00

Geelong has notched up their sixth win of the season, defeating North Melbourne by 33 points at the Gabba.

Gryan Miers was the star for the Cats, kicking four goals and looked his side’s most likely target throughout the night.

He was aided by Tom Hawkins, who kicked three majors and is now just three behind Josh Kennedy in the race for this year's Coleman Medal.

In a game riddled with skill errors, AFL Nation’s Liam Pickering suggested the short break between games could’ve played a role in the quality of the match.

North Melbourne will be counting the cost of the defeat after Ben Brown suffered a nasty knee injury in the first quarter after he was crunched in a tackle.

Here’s everything you need to know!

The story: Ben Brown’s knee concern

The North Melbourne talisman picked up a knee injury in the opening term and played no further part in the match after being ruled out early in the second quarter.

He was recalled this week after being dropped before their big win against Adelaide last weekend.

It goes without saying just how much of a blow it for the Roos moving forward, with games coming thick and fast during the footy frenzy.

Rhyce Shaw was forced to change the makeup of his side’s forward line during the clash, using Josh Walker and Majak Daw as tall marking targets and both Lachie Hosie and Will Walker as smaller types alongside Cam Zurhaar, who had a quiet night.

It’s the latest in a growing list of injury concerns at North Melbourne, with Jack Ziebell (hamstring) and Ben Cunnington (back) still on the sidelines.

The debutant: Lachie Hosie’s two first-quarter goals

There’s been plenty of hype surrounding the 23-year-old medium-sized forward out of Glenelg and life at AFL level could’ve hardly started better as he kicked two goals in the first quarter, both from free kicks.

He showed plenty of good signs in his first game and considering where North Melbourne are on the ladder, he’s well worth pursuing with this season.

What’s next?

Geelong will back up in five days at the Gabba, where they’ll face a stern test against the in-form St Kilda in Round 11.

Meanwhile next round, North Melbourne will head to Adelaide for a clash with the Demons in just four days’ time at the Adelaide Oval.
