Cummings: Bulldogs midfield lacks leg speed

2020-08-08T22:15+10:00

Scott Cummings says the Western Bulldogs midfield is sluggish and lacks the leg speed the team has elsewhere on the ground.

Speaking at three-quarter time of the Bulldogs loss to the Brisbane Lions, the 1999 Coleman Medalist told AFL Nation the visitors were struggling due to their lack of speed.

“I think they’ve got too many sluggish midfielders, there’s not anyone with real leg speed," he said.

“They need someone as quick as Jason Johannisen in the middle of the ground.

“Macrae gets a lot of the footy, he’s had 31 touches but 21 of those are handballs."

Cummings said the Lions dominance at stoppages reflected the Bulldogs' troubles.

“They’ve got to start winning the ball in the centre clearances," he said.

“They started off so well and then Brisbane have been dominant 31-7 in clearances.

“It’s a fairly large differential when you’ve got blokes like Zorko and Neale using the footy so well and so many weapons.

"You’ve got defenders in Keath and Gardner who are battling at the moment and when the ball’s coming in so many times, there’s no way to get their confidence back."

The Bulldogs host Adelaide at Metricon Stadium next Saturday afternoon.
