Port maintain top spot with win over Tigers

2020-08-08T19:05+10:00

Port Adelaide have triumphed over Richmond by 21 points in one of the matches of the season so far at the Adelaide Oval.

The Power opened up a 26-point lead early in the first term but the reigning premiers forced their way back into the contest and from then on a see-sawing battle ensued.

Any time the Tigers looked to have the momentum Port Adelaide worked hard to get it back, spurred on by the majority of the 10,000 strong crowd.

Richmond led by a point at three-quarter time before three quick goals in five minutes to the home side swung the game back in Port’s favour once and for all.

The Power held the Tigers scoreless in the final term.

Travis Boak continued his good form for Port with 31 disposals while Ollie Wines collected 28 and a goal.

Jack Riewoldt registered 3 goals for the Tigers while Robbie Gray also kicked 3 from his 22 disposals and would’ve had 4 majors if the second quarter ran a few seconds longer.

Charlie Dixon will be disappointed with his set shot goalkicking, only managing 2 goals 4 behinds to move to equal fifth in the Coleman Medal race.

The Talking Point: Are Port the real deal yet?

Losses to other contenders Brisbane and St Kilda aside, Port Adelaide has done almost everything the football world has asked of them. While the Tigers are still missing some key players, Port comfortably dealt with the challenges the reigning premiers threw at them and arguably should’ve won by more given the number of set shots they missed throughout the match. The win ensures the Power will once again finish the round on top of the ladder.

What’s next?

Port Adelaide travel to the Gold Coast to face Geelong at Metricon Stadium next Friday night while Richmond hold the Gold Coast Suns at the Gabba next Monday night.
