There’s been a strange twist in Essendon’s pursuit of out-of-favour Gold Coast Suns midfielder Will Brodie, according to AFL Media’s Callum Twomey.
The 2016 first-round draft pick has only played one game this season and that came way back in Round 1 in Gold Coast’s loss to Port Adelaide, when he had 14 touches and took three marks.
With clubs unable to play in state-league competitions at the moment due to COVID-19, teams have been holding scratch matches between each other.
Essendon came up against Gold Coast in a scratch match on Friday – giving the Bombers a first-hand look at a player who they’re reportedly eying in the upcoming trade period.
But according to Twomey, due to an imbalance in player numbers Brodie ironically played for Essendon against the Suns in the match.
Brodie has played 20 games for the Suns in four seasons and is currently contracted to the club until the end of 2022.
He's struggled to break into Gold Coast's midfield this year and is now a target for the Bombers, according to the report.
Funny footy world. Gold Coast’s Will Brodie, on the radar of Essendon as the Bombers search for inside mids, played for the Bombers in a scratch match today to even up numbers. That’s one way to look at a possible recruit...
