Hardwick livid at “really poor” moment in Richmond loss

2020-08-09T12:45+10:00

Richmond coach Damien Hardwick admits his side’s discipline must tighten up with a 100-metre penalty proving costly in Saturday’s loss to Port Adelaide.

Power midfielder Tom Rockliff was gifted a crucial goal in the final quarter after Dustin Martin and Josh Caddy conceded consecutive 50-metre penalties.

Caddy failed to exit the protected area despite being warned by the umpire with Hardwick venting his anger in the coaches’ box as the Tigers fell to a 21-point defeat to the ladder leaders.

"That's a disappointing one obviously and hopefully Josh (Caddy) learns from it. It was just poor, really poor," Hardwick told reporters post-game.

"The 50-metre (penalties) are disappointing, there's no doubt.

“We ask our guys to play to the line and sometimes they're going to step over it.

“But they'll address it. As leaders they’ll sit down and sort that out. We've got to be better in that area.

"Free kicks against we're always relatively poor in that part of the game, and a lot of it is because of the way we play but we've got to probably tighten up a little bit from a discipline point of view."

Fourth-placed Richmond turn its attention to next Monday night's match against Gold Coast at the Gabba.
