A Jack Newnes goal after the final siren propelled Carlton to a four-point win over Fremantle at Optus Stadium.
The Blues overturned a two-point three-quarter time deficit to keep their finals hopes alive after trailing for all but two minutes of the match.
Fremantle opened proceedings with a three goal to none first term but were slowly reeled back by the Blues over the course of the game.
The Blues kicked three goals to one in a low-scoring second half and it was the controversial free kick to Newnes that allowed the away side the chance to grab the lead for the first time since the first term and claim the four points
Luke Ryan continued his All Australian form for the home side with 24 disposals and elite composure down back at crucial times.
Dual Brownlow Medalist and Fremantle captain Nat Fyfe recorded 21 disposals while Carlton adversary Patrick Cripps had 24 touches.
Ed Curnow dominated for the Blues, recording 33 touches while Sam Walsh managed a goal and 25 touches.
Dockers tall Matt Taberner kicked 3 majors.
The Talking Point: The down field free kick
It looked like the Dockers had the game in the bag with ten seconds remaining when the last Carlton forray forward resulted in Docherty kicking the ball out of bounds on the full. The umpires, however, pulled out a down-the-ground free kick that resulted in Jack Newnes winning the match from a tight angle.
Controversial umpiring decisions have been the talk of the last few weeks and this call ensures talkback callers will have more fodder moving forward into round 13.
What’s next?
Carlton travel to Darwin to take on the Gold Coast Suns at TIO Stadium on Friday night while Fremantle host the Sydney Swans at Optus Stadium on Saturday night.
