Why Lyon and Watson have no problem with North Melbourne selling “home” game

North Melbourne and West Coast have opened talks about relocating their Round 18 game from Queensland to Perth.

SEN’s chief sports reporter Sam Edmund revealed on Tuesday that the Kangaroos and Eagles are keen to move the match from the Gabba or Metricon Stadium to Optus Stadium.

The proposal would help both clubs in different ways.

Another game in Perth would boost West Coast’s chances of a top two finish while North Melbourne could pocket as much as $700,000.

It's a move that is sure to anger other finals-bound clubs but Garry Lyon explained why he doesn’t have a problem with the Roos selling the "home" game.

“I think in this instance they (North Melbourne) should. I don’t know what the downside is,” Lyon told SEN Breakfast.

“They get $700,000, they aren’t making the finals, it doesn’t really bother them I wouldn’t have thought whether they play West Coast in Perth or in Brisbane.

“Other teams will get narky because it will be seen to giving the West Coast Eagles an advantage, well, it’s that sort of year.

“There’s no fairness in what’s going on at the moment. I don’t mind it.”

It’s understood North Melbourne has lost more than $2 million in revenue after the AFL decided against hosting games in Hobart.

“I agree (with moving the game). Given how financially strapped clubs are going to be,” Tim Watson said.

“North can’t make the finals, it gives the West Coast Eagles a little bit of a leg up but they’re going into the (Queensland) hub again.

“They’ve had seven weeks in a hub, they’ve gone back to WA, now they’re going into a hub again.

“I don’t think it’s too much to ask.”

West Coast (7-0) are unbeaten at Optus Stadium this season and are yet to lose a final at the venue.
