Why Port Adelaide will not pursue Brad Crouch

2020-08-27T09:02+10:00

Seven News reported on Tuesday night that out of contract Adelaide midfielder Brad Crouch would welcome a move to Port Adelaide at the end of the season.

The restricted free agent would reportedly prefer to stay in South Australia with his management welcome to calls from the Power.

Crouch has been linked with a move out of the Crows all year, given the club’s deep rebuild and the potential compensation pick they could receive.

However, Kane Cornes cannot see his old side pursuing the midfielder.

“He won’t be at Port Adelaide. I can tell you he’s not going to be at Port Adelaide and you don’t need to be Einstein to work out why,” Cornes told SEN SA Breakfast.

“As much as they rate him as a player and they think he has attributes that are attractive, in terms of the make-up of their side the last type of player Port Adelaide needs is a player with the attributes of Brad Crouch.

“They struggle to get Tom Rockliff, Travis Boak, Ollie Wines and Sam Powell-Pepper into the same side.

“So to add another midfielder with similar attributes to those four, a player that doesn’t have electric speed or is a really exquisite user of the ball, he just doesn’t fit into that mix.

“You’ve also got to factor in that Willem Drew hasn’t played as well and he’s another inside midfielder, Joe Atley, whether he’s up to the level I’m not sure, but he’s still also on their list, so there’s another couple of young ones they’d like to work out whether they have a future at AFL level.

“So to give a big deal, which Brad is looking for, with his injury history, I don’t think it’s that attractive for Port Adelaide and I can tell you they haven’t even addressed it with his manager yet and I don’t think they will.

“Brad Crouch won’t be at Alberton next year.”

Crouch told FiveAA on Wednesday that he was allowing his manager to weigh up all of his options.

“I haven’t said I don’t want to, or I want to go to any specific side or anything like that. At the moment I just want to play footy,” Crouch said.

“Well they (Port) haven’t spoken to me, but they might have spoken to my management.

“I still haven’t sat down with the footy club and with the people at the moment. We’re probably going to wait until the end of the season to do that. At the same time, there’s no doubt I’m in the position now.

“Do I want to sit here & be a part of a pretty big rebuild with the footy club and do I 100 per cent want to go into that and believe we can turn it around in a couple of years or do I go off to another footy club that’s in the window and be a chance to maybe win a premiership which I’ve always wanted to do?

“I definitely know what our plan is going forward. At the same time I want to make sure me, the footy club and management are all on the same page about where we are all heading.

“To be honest I still don’t know what’s going to happen, I still haven’t made my decision. I know I want to play the last four games here and work it out after the season.

“There’s no reason to do anything beforehand, I think a lot of stuff will happen trade time that will determine if I will be there. The compensation might be really good so they might be happy to see me go so there’s a lot that’s got to go under the bridge.”
