Why the 2020 season will "significantly" help Brisbane attract trade targets

2020-09-02T09:15+10:00

Almost the entire 2020 AFL season has taken place in South-East Queensland, with all 16 interstate teams spending time in the sunshine state.

For so long, the Lions and Suns have had issues retaining players from other states, but could this prolonged period in Queensland flip the script?

Brisbane captain Dayne Zorko believes these last few months will help them lure players from other clubs.

“I really do, I think it will significantly (help us attract players),” Zorko told SEN Breakfast.

“You know, 16 AFL teams have had the opportunity to stay here for a large period of time, experience the weather, experience the ground and everything like that so I can’t see how this wouldn’t help.

“Whether it relocates players or makes it enticing for players to want to move and play up here in Queensland.”

In general, Zorko believes the AFL has grown significantly across the last few months in the state and hosting the 2020 Grand Final will only add to that.

“Absolutely it has. Even the numbers for two interstate teams playing at Metricon and the Gabba, I think that shows how much the game has grown in South-East Queensland in the last three or four months,” he said.

“The AFL has done so much up here in Queensland and it’s continuing to do that and I think it’s great the fans and supporters have come out and shown how much they’re into the games and supporting their teams.”

Brisbane’s success has also been a factor this year, with the Lions sitting third on the ladder with a game in hand.

They take on bogey side Collingwood on Friday night at the Gabba.
