Adelaide midfielder set to retire after final game against former club

Adelaide midfielder Bryce Gibbs is set to play his final AFL game against former club Carlton this weekend, according to AFL Media’s Mitch Cleary.

The 31-year-old has hardly been sighted at AFL level this year, only playing two games so far in his third year at the Crows.

According to the report, Gibbs has been recalled for one last AFL game against the Blues in what looms as a fitting ending for the revered on-baller.

Adelaide released a statement later on Thursday confirming the report, with Gibbs saying the time was right to finish his career.

“I’m so thankful to the Adelaide Football Club for giving me the chance to come home to South Australia and be closer to friends and family,” Gibbs said in a club statement.

“I would have loved to have played more footy for the Crows and it’s an incredible environment here, and I’ve really enjoyed helping and trying to positively influence the younger blokes.

“Looking ahead to next year, there would have been limited opportunities for me given the Club is rebuilding and the time is right to step aside and let the next generation grab their opportunity.”

Gibbs had a contract for 2021 but Adelaide and his management have reportedly agreed to a settlement.

He played 231 games for Carlton between 2007 and 2017 before moving to Adelaide, where he’s played 36 games.
