Sam Edmund's trade and free agency update on Silvagni, Frawley, Viney and more

2020-10-02T09:33+10:00

SEN's Chief Sports Reporter Sam Edmund has the latest on a number of trade and free agency targets, including a trio of GWS young guns, a former Melbourne captain and a veteran Hawk.

Speaking on SEN Breakfast, Edmund is expecting Melbourne midfielder Jack Viney to re-sign, while Jack Silvgani's future at Carlton is clouded.

Here's the latest:

Jy Caldwell, Jackson Hately and Xavier O’Halloran

Sam says: “These are the first three picks of the 2018 National Draft (for GWS).

“The Giants are digging in letting Caldwell go to St Kilda and they love O’Halloran too because he’s got a bit of a versatility.

“I think Jackson Hately is the one that falls out here, Adelaide prioritised him some time ago.

“He hasn’t pulled the trigger on a move yet, but I’d say that’s a fair chance of happening in the near future."

Jack Viney

Sam says: “It’s sounding like Jack Viney is going to re-sign with Melbourne.

“It’s been a rocky last few months, the Cats have at least touched base here but they were a bit apart on money and that was the initial hurdle they had to overcome.

“Melbourne thought their first offer was reasonable but then the Viney camp went way above what Melbourne thought was fair.

“There’s been a bit of back and forth but I’m hearing they’re just about there (on a new contract).”

Jack Silvagni

Sam says: “This is a sensitive one.

“He’s contracted for next year and I’m told by Carlton people that this could go either way, I just wonder whether Blues fans will be upset by this.

“He pressures well and might be the best pressure forward Carlton has got, he can go into the middle at times too and just needs a bit of continuity.”

James Frawley

Sam says: “Hawthorn is playing the waiting game.

“He hasn’t been offered a new deal and he’s got a bit of an uncertain future, Hawthorn is keeping their cards close to their chest which makes you think they’re up to something – they don’t have many key defenders there.

“Even if Frawley is 32 and battled this year with so much ball coming into their back fifty, you’d think he’d be good to go around again.

“It’s a wait and see for James Frawley.”
