Why out of favour Cat should "bide his time" and not leave the club

2020-10-01T17:07+10:00

Geelong midfielder Charlie Constable seems a likely candidate for a fresh start at the end of the year.

The 21-year-old has only played two games so far in 2020, with the likes of Brandan Parfitt and Cam Guthrie securing roles on-ball for the Cats ahead of him.

Despite being contracted for 2021, he has been linked with a move out of the club and will attract interest from rival Victorian teams in need of an inside midfielder.

However, Dwayne Russell believes Constable’s best move would be to stay patient at Geelong.

“If I was Charlie Constable, I wouldn’t leave (Geelong),” Russell told SEN’s Dwayne’s World.

“I know he’s not getting a game and sometimes it hurts. I mean, I was in that exact situation with Geelong not getting a game, but we were premiership contenders.

“So you know teams like the Kangaroos are on the rebuild. So does Charlie Constable want to be part of that or does he want to be a chance to win a flag and stay with a really good group that might be in the window for a while?

“Geelong has a couple of guys that are getting towards the end. So maybe he bides his time and he doesn’t get a game in the Grand Final team this year and next year only plays half the games, but the guys at the top now, they’re going to have to retire in the next couple of years.

“So there could be openings for Charlie Constable if he sticks around and it might be an opening in a team that’s still in the premiership window as opposed to getting more money and a game every week at a team like the Kangaroos. If I was him I’d be sticking around at Geelong.”

Constable played in rounds eight and nine for the Cats, picking up 16 and 19 disposals respectively.

Teams like North Melbourne, Essendon, St Kilda, Carlton and Hawthorn will likely be exploring the possibility of signing a young midfielder like Constable.
