Collingwood pulls off INSANE one-point victory against West Coast in finals boilover

2020-10-03T22:37+10:00

Written off all week, Collingwood has pulled off the most stunning of upsets to beat West Coast by just one point at Optus Stadium.

Saturday night’s high-pressure elimination final was a battle of styles – the clean Eagles forward of centre against the manic Pies, who thrived on a more haphazard method of entry inside forward 50.

On several occasions, especially in the third term, the Eagles threatened to put a distance between them and the Pies on the scoreboard but Nathan Buckley’s side held firm to take a 10-point lead into the final quarter.

It gave way to an utterly thrilling final term, where Collingwood withstood a barrage of pressure to record the narrowest of victories.

"There's been magical moments from the Pies (in the final quarter)," Terry Wallace said on AFL Nation.

Here's everything you need to know!

The man of the moment: Brody Mihocek’s big-time double

Cometh the hour, cometh the man.

Brody Mihocek pulled off two incredible fourth-quarter goals to guide Collingwood home in one of the most frenzied quarters of the season.

The first one came after a sustained period of West Coast dominance, where he was on the end of a Pies rebound and kicked a floater through from 50 metres out.

The second goal saw him take a massive contested mark and then made no mistake with the snap, which turned out to be Collingwood's final goal of the night.

He was then moved behind the ball as the spare defender and took a crucial intercept mark as the Pies held on despite conceding the final two majors of the game.

The surprise: American Pie’s stunning opening quarter

Mason Cox wound back the clock, kicking three goals against the Eagles in a display of elite marking that set the game alight in the first term.

In scenes reminiscent of his performance in the 2018 preliminary final against Richmond, Cox was superb and gave his side the perfect start in enemy territory.

He took three strong contested grabs and didn’t miss any of the set shots that followed, giving his side the dream start and silencing the parochial West Coast crowd at Optus Stadium.
