“We don’t live in a vacuum": Buckley reveals detail on De Goey contract talks

2020-10-10T23:33+11:00

Nathan Buckley has reminded Jordan De Goey of what Collingwood has done for him as the gun forward prepares to make a decision on his future.

Following the Magpies' 68-point loss to Geelong on Saturday night, attention will now turn to the future of several of their out-of-contract players.

De Goey, who kicked 14 goals from 10 games this season, still remains without a deal for 2021.

He is currently being represented by his father Roger after he parted way with former manager Ben Niall earlier this year.

Buckley revealed the club and De Goey's management were still negotiating on monetary terms, saying there needed to be a “satisfactory” outcome for both parties before a contract could be signed.

“We don’t live in a vacuum and we’re aware of the conversations that take place,” Buckley told reporters.

“Jordan (De Goey) loves the club and he wants to be here, elements of people on his side would like to see him remunerated as well as he possibly could and we want him to be rewarded appropriately as well, as we do the other 44 blokes on our list for what they bring to the table.

“I think that is what it comes down to because there’s no lack of belief for what the place has done for him, the opportunity it provides and the love and care and connection that he has not only to the club but his teammates.

“There still needs to be a monitory outcome that needs to be satisfactory for both parties.”

As first revealed by SEN Breakfast’s Garry Lyon and Tim Watson on Friday, Carlton is interested in securing the 24-year-old as they look to make the most of salary cap room they’ve stockpiled.

The news comes on the back of both Zac Williams and Adam Saad signalling their intention to the join the Blues during the upcoming trade and free agency period.

Buckley said he fully expected either De Goey or his management to talk to opposition clubs considering he remains unsigned.

“Most players do and if they don’t, their managers will,” he said.

“We’re in an open market, if you’re uncontracted and a free agent – that’s what it is designed for.”
