St Kilda's next All-Australian, left-field trade target and who to expect a big 2021 from

2020-10-16T11:31+11:00

Nick Riewoldt has delivered his Unconventional Club Review of St Kilda for season 2020.

Riewoldt was asked to answer a list of questions about the Saints relating to their performance this year and what they need to improve in 2021.

Have the Saints got the right captain? If not, who?

Riewoldt: "Moving forward, no. I think Jarryn Geary has done an amazing job.

"I think next year it's Jack Steele. It's his position, he's grown to a level now where he'll have the confidence to be able to lead that group and know his performances are going to back it up."

Garry Lyon: "Snap." (Jack Steele).

Who is the Saints' next All-Australian?

Riewoldt: "If you take the question literally, I think the next one will be Jack Steele, he'll butter up again.

"But if it's someone fresh, I think Dan Butler should have been an All-Australian this year. The way the Saints play, the way they bring their small forwards into the game, I think he suits their game style perfectly.

"I think he's a really good chance to butter up and have another really good year next year."

Garry Lyon: "The transition he (Hunter Clark) has made from a fine half-back to a midfielder with poise and control with ball in hand.

"I think he might be the next All-Australian."

If “player x” plays well, the Saints are always a chance of winning?

Riewoldt: "I have to eat some humble pie here because at the start of the year I didn't even think he should have been in the best side because it was depriving another player of an opportunity, and that's Paddy Ryder."

Garry Lyon: "I have gone with Tim Membrey.

"I just reckon that he adds something to that side. When he plays well, they generally win."

Left-field trade option?

Riewoldt: "Jack Billings is a player that's got a lot of currency, Seb Ross has got a lot of currency - he's won two best and fairests over the past few years.

"If they're in the market for that (quality) mid, you've got to give something up to get something. I think clubs will think Billings is gettable.

"I wouldn't do the Billings one because his upside is too big but if you get the right price for him or a Seb Ross then I would be prepared to do the deal."

Garry Lyon: "I went with Luke Dunstan."

Left-field trade target?

Riewoldt: "I'd look at a club like Hawthorn who have a sameness about their midfield who are in the rebuild period now and don't have many draft picks.

"I'd go to them with my first pick and maybe next year's first or second pick and try and get Jaeger O'Meara.

"Or somebody like a Josh Kennedy from Sydney, a big bodied midfielder who can give you a couple of years and some leadership and experience."

Garry Lyon: "While there's speculation swirling around Adam Treloar, go and ask the question. Go and ask the question of him."

Which player is deserving of a pay rise?

Riewoldt: "Dan Butler. He would have come across on minimum sheets and he has well and truly earned a pay rise."

Garry Lyon: "I've gone with (Callum) Wilkie. I think he needs a pay rise.

"He came across as a mild-mannered accountant and now he's almost their number one defender."

Who deserves a pay cut?

Riewoldt: "Brad Hill didn't have a great year.

"We'll give him a mulligan but he wouldn't want to make it two in a row."

Garry Lyon: "Brad Hill needs a pay cut."

Expect a big 2021 from?

Riewoldt: "Hunter Clark. I think he's a super player.

"He got a lot more confident towards the end of the year, you started to see him take players on when there was congestion and then use the footy really well."

Garry Lyon: "I think he (Max King) might just blow the joint up next year."

Big positional change in 2021?

Riewoldt: "I think it's Hunter Clark into the midfield. He looks like Scott Pendlebury when he's got the footy."

Garry Lyon: "Grab his mate (Nick) Coffield and take him with him and the two of them can go through the midfield."
