After the Monster Energy Ford Mustang topped five of the nine sessions held at the Mount Panorama Circuit, Cameron Waters will start the 2020 Supercheap Auto Bathurst 1000 from pole position.

The in form Waters ripped through the Top-10 Shootout on Saturday afternoon to rocket himself into P1 with a time of 2:03.599, eclipsing his former Tickford teammate Chaz Mostert's lap of 2.03.789 set last year.

Defending champion Scott McLaughlin will start in second after posting a 2:04.002, while mistakes from seven time champion Jamie Whincup and his teammate Shane van Gisbergen took both Red Bull Holden Racing Team drivers out of the running for pole.

"I’m a little bit pissed with myself as it looked like we were on for potentially second, but I just got it wrong." said van Gisbergen who is on the hunt for his maiden win at Mount Panorama. "We’ll debrief later tonight and figure out what our strategy is for tomorrow, taking into account some wild weather predicted, but it’s a big day tomorrow and anything can happen. My job is to not make any mistakes and hopefully be the first car to get the chequered flag.”

The Supercheap Auto Bathurst 1000 race start will be at the earlier time of 11:00 (AEDST) due to the threat of wild weather.
