Matthews admits to Norm Smith Medal voting blunder

2020-10-25T12:48+11:00

Leigh Matthews has admitted to accidently selecting Nathan Broad instead of Jayden Short in the voting for the Norm Smith Medal.

Matthews chaired a five-person panel to adjudge who was best afield in Saturday night’s Grand Final between Richmond and Geelong along with Lauren Arnell, Malcolm Blight, Damian Barrett and Peter Ryan.

Tigers star Dustin Martin (15 votes) became the first player to win three Norm Smith Medals with Short (6), Shane Edwards (4), Mitch Duncan (3) and Broad (2) making up the final leaderboard.

Matthews voted for Martin (3), Broad (2) and Edwards (1) but later conceded that Short should have received two votes.

“I didn’t, did I? I thought I’d gone Martin, Short and Edwards,” Matthews told Channel Nine’s Sunday Footy Show.

“All I can say is that’s the worst mistake that’s ever happened because if I put down the name Broad instead of the name Short, I was being hustled at the end of the game to write down the names quickly.

“I’m glad Short didn't miss out by a couple of votes. I’m sure everyone gave Martin best on the ground, so I guess the twos and ones didn’t matter that much.

“But if I put Broad down that was a very big mistake on my part. It was definitely Short two and Edwards one."

Short was outstanding for Richmond in the 31-point triumph over the Cats finishing with 25 disposals, six tackles, eight intercepts, six score involvements and a huge 771 metres gained.
