De Goey's manager "hasn't helped" contract negotiations: Cleary

2020-10-26T12:26+11:00

Jordan De Goey’s father Roger is currently managing his son and his inexperience in the job hasn’t helped in negotiations with Collingwood, according to Mitch Cleary.

The out-of-contract Pies forward is expected to re-sign on a new two-year deal in the coming weeks after he was reportedly shopped around to rival clubs in previous weeks.

Cleary said De Goey being linked with a move to Carlton earlier the month came from the player’s end, with the Blues never really signalling their interest.

“The Carlton interest was more from De Goey’s side and exploring a club with money,” he said on AFL Trade Radio’s Trade Mornings.

“I don’t think (De Goey being managed by his father) has helped – if you have an experienced manager who has done this before, they know the timeline.

“How hard do you go; his old man is a fireman and he’s not trained to do this. A manager at this time of year is critical to know what your value is when the right time to go harder or pull back.

Former St Kilda and Essendon defender Brendon Goddard urged De Goey to find a trained player manager rather than using his father, saying he needed guidance as to what his real market value is.

“He as a player wouldn’t really know his value,” he said.

“He would only know what we as the general public would know, whereas players rely on managers. De Goey is 24 and doesn’t have the experience, when you get to 28 you have a better understanding of what you’re worth.

“But he’d have no idea.”

De Goey played 10 games for Collingwood this year, kicking 14 goals and averaging 13 touches.
