"Toughen up": Lloyd's blunt message to Melbourne forward

2020-10-29T12:20+11:00

Matthew Lloyd says Melbourne forward Sam Weideman has to get tougher, imploring him to put in extra work this pre-season.

The 23-year-old played 13 games for the Demons this season, but only kicked 19 goals as one of the side’s main targets inside 50.

Taken with pick nine in the 2015 National Draft, Weideman has played 44 games in five years at the club.

Lloyd said it was imperative Weideman toughened up ahead of next season, saying he has “all the talent in the world”, but is yet to fulfil it.

“I am thinking about Sam Weideman,” he said on AFL Trade Radio’s The Early Trade.

“He needs one of the toughest pre-seasons, I’d put the boxing gloves on him.

“Just give him one of the toughest pre-seasons he’s ever had in terms of physicality, just make it all about him having to fight and scrap.

“Have bags where the ball is kicked up into a contested mark situation, people are coming from behind and hitting him with things.

“Toughen up Sam, you have all the talent in the world, but you’re kicking 10 goals a season and getting dropped because you’re not physical enough.”

Melbourne is currently on the lookout for more forward support during the trade period, with North Melbourne's Ben Brown reportedly looming as the club’s primary target.
