Edmund’s trade update on Cameron, McDonald, Dunkley, McKernan, Stephenson and more

2020-11-02T10:11+11:00

SEN’s Chief Sports Reporter Sam Edmund has delivered the latest on a number of players who are being linked with potential club moves.

Edmund joined SEN Breakfast to give a snapshot on a handful of potential trades.

Jeremy Cameron

“I actually think Geelong were a bit surprised. My mail is they were very confident they would get Jeremy Cameron for nothing trade wise.

“That offer is enormous, five years at more than $900,000. I think they were somewhat surprised that the match has come back from GWS.

“It’s fascinating now because if a best 22 player isn’t offered up then it’s game on. The compo would be pick 11, they got pick 10 for (Zac) Williams. Pick 11 for Jeremy Cameron isn’t going to cut it up there.

“We could be talking three-way trades, four-way trades or anything to make it happen.”

Brad Crouch

“It must be really close.

“We haven’t had any official confirmation. There’s been a lot of conjecture that it will be pick 23. We haven’t actually heard that categorically yet but given that Adelaide haven’t let him walk yet, they haven’t said they’re matching, they haven’t said anything.

“Just that Adam Kelly said yesterday they’ll match it. We assume that it is a second-round pick.”

Mason Cox, Tom Phillips and Jaidyn Stephenson

“Cox was floated last year and we’ve spoken about it a lot. I think if a suitor came along they would definitely part with his 550 (thousand a year).

“Tommy Phillips, same deal. A year to run on a contract, back-ended, more than 550. In fact, they’ve already told him that he could be traded and he’s open to that. I don’t believe there’s been a heck of a lot of interest.

“There’s been rumours for most of the second half of the year around Jaidyn Stephenson. I made a few calls on it, they assure me he will be there. He’s going to knuckle down. Hub life didn’t agree with him I think it’s absolutely fair to say.

“I think Collingwood would part with that money if they could just because they’re so tight but the player wants to stay and will stay. It will take something extraordinary.”

Tom McDonald

“The other name that has come up to Collingwood is Tom McDonald.

“Two years on a contract to run at Melbourne at around $600,000, that deal he signed at the peak of his powers in 2018.

“Melbourne are looking to move him on. I think Collingwood are the real front runners to snare Tom McDonald. How they make that happen will be interesting.

“They’d play him down back. I think Jordan Roughead, they probably see the writing on the wall as he’s closer to the end. They want to play Tommy Mac in defence.”

Ben Brown

“No deal has been formally announced but he’s done the medical there (at Melbourne). He’s with met with the coaching staff as well.

“All things point to him joining Melbourne on a relatively straightforward deal. The Dees have got pick 23, I’m sure North Melbourne will ask for more than that but I think that one will get done.”

Shaun McKernan

“The other name that came up which surprised me yesterday, we spoke about Shaun McKernan potentially going to St Kilda.

“I’m hearing Melbourne are also in the running for Shaun McKernan now.

“So, it will be one or the other (St Kilda or Melbourne) which is intriguing for lots of reasons. They’ve got (Luke) Jackson coming on there, Tom McDonald is still there, Ben Brown coming in, (Sam) Weideman forward and (Max) Gawn in the ruck.

“As assurance you pay nothing for him. He was a delisted free agent, it’s minimum chips sort of stuff. Whether Melbourne could snare Shaun McKernan, could be a sneaky one to look out for.

“It’s a surprising one, I just got told it was one or the other (Saints or Dees).”

Josh Dunkley

“Stalemate at the moment.

“Essendon people tell me he wants to move, he’s made it very clear he wants to get across there and they even say he’s gone as far as telling some teammates he wants to move and some club staff that he wants out.

“Then the Dogs say no formal request has been put in. The Dogs don’t have to do anything now.

“We’ve got a long time until the end of the window closes so the Bombers aren’t in any particular hurry. They’ve planted the seed, they think they’ve got their man, but they’ll now wait to see if the pressure can build on the Western Bulldogs and also Josh Dunkley to try and force a move through.”

Adam Saad

“Pick 8 Carlton has. They had 7 but the (Joe) Daniher compo pushes them back.

“In an ideal world Carlton would like to split pick 8. You get two later first-round picks back, you give one to Essendon in the teens and you keep one for the draft.

“For whatever reason that hasn’t happened. Speaking to someone familiar with this deal, I think 8 is going to go to Essendon. Then the Blues would like something back for that deal to take place.

“Essendon would have to get a second-round pick in and then on-trade it to the Blues.

“That’s how it’s looking at the moment on paper.”
