Wells confident Geelong can satisfy Giants and seal Cameron deal

Geelong list manager Stephen Wells has spoken for the first on the developing negotiations to bring star forward Jeremy Cameron to the club.

GWS opted on Monday to match Geelong’s deal for Cameron, which is reported to be worth $900,000 per season over five years.

The Giants are interested in prising a player out of Geelong, rather than getting multiple draft picks.

SEN Chief Sports Reporter Sam Edmund reported that the two clubs hadn’t been speaking as of Wednesday night, but The Age later reported that talks on the Cameron deal had since begun on Thursday.

Wells confirmed talks were ongoing, with the club still confident they have enough trade capital to ensure the deal is finalised before next Thursday’s trade period deadline.

“It’s very early in the piece in terms of trying to organise a deal,” he said on AFL Trade Radio’s Late Trade.

“We have to try and organise a deal, we’ll do what we can within reason to facilitate the trade.

“One thing that the Giants have demonstrated by the fact that they matched the offer is they are looking to be better compensated than they would have been through free agency compensation.

“If we can do a deal that the Giants are better off than they would have been, then I think we have those assets at our disposal to come up with something that means they are better off.

“We’re clear now on what the Giants are after, clearly we hope that Jeremy plays for Geelong and that is his wish.

“We’ll do what we can to come up with a reasonable offer.”

The 27-year-old has been at the Giants since the club’s inception in 2012, kicking 427 goals from 171 games.
