Joseph O’Brien on track for Cummings-like greatness

2020-11-06T11:45+11:00

Jye McNeil high in the irons sporting the famous Lloyd Williams blue and white silks aboard an incredibly tough horse crossing the line at Flemington was a sight to behold.

While no spectators were there to witness the 2020 Melbourne Cup, it is a race that will likely go down in Australian racing folklore and it saw the emergence of what could be one of the great trainers that we will see this generation.

Joseph O’Brien, son of the Irish great Aidan O’Brien, once again beat his father to the post with Twilight Payment staving off Tiger Moth in what was shades of the 2017 Cup when Rekindling got the better of Johannes Vermeer in a similar finish.

It gives young Joseph his second Melbourne Cup victory at the age of just 27 and has him well on the path to greatness.

It is a feat that should not be overlooked with Hamish McLachlan highlighting the incredible achievement and suggesting that we could well be witnessing one of the greatest of all-time emerging as a trainer.

“Joseph, he’s 27 (years of age), he’s won two Cups, fourth last year with Master Of Reality, was second over the line and pushed back a bit (due to a protest), so he’s had eight runners for two wins and a fourth,” McLachlan said on SEN's Whateley.

“The kid beats the old man, we thought his father was the best trainer in the world, he may prove to be, at 27 he’s got two Cups.”

“Bart only got his licence at 26, he won his first Cup at 38, he had 89 runners in his life, we could be seeing one of the greats of all-time just getting going.”

While O'Brien junior is still a whopping 10 Melbourne Cups away from the legendary Cummings, he has made a very impressive start by already claiming two of Australia’s greatest race.
