Mitch Cleary's trade update on Martin, Mundy plus the latest on both Dunkley brothers

2020-11-06T12:03+11:00

AFL Trade Radio’s Mitch Cleary joined Julian De Stoop and Brendon Goddard on Trade Mornings for all the latest on day three of the Trade Period.

Cleary said fringe Essendon ruckman Andrew Phillips could be on the move again, while he had updates on where he believes the Bombers’ pursuit for both Josh and Kyle Dunkley is at.

See all the latest here:

Andrew Phillips

“He’s out of contract and he has interest from Melbourne,” he said on AFL Trade Radio’s Trade Mornings.

“The Demons are pretty keen for some support for Max Gawn now that Braydon Preuss has headed to Greater Western Sydney.

“Phillips won’t play very often, but he provides a back up if Gawn gets injured. They see Luke Jackson more as a forward and he is going to develop there.

“If the Demons pick him up, Phillips will wait in the wings if Gawn goes down. With Preuss moving on, it does make sense to have some sort of back up.”

Josh Dunkley

“The Dogs statement last night was just the smallest softening.

“They have been adamant the whole way through that they’re not trading him and that he’s contracted.

“But just that last line where they said they were here to improve their list (makes you wonder).”

Kyle Dunkley

“It’s been raised by the Bombers in terms of picking him up.

“It’s no guarantee but Essendon (has said) that they may look at him. The Bombers need inside midfielders and he’s a young inside mid – he was rated as the best inside midfielder in the mid-season draft last year.

“It was always tough for him to break into that Melbourne midfield when guys like James Harmes and Angus Brayshaw can’t get regular midfielder minutes.

“It’s one for the Bombers to consider, and all these little things may add up (to his brother Josh joining Essendon).”

Stefan Martin

“I think the Dogs are really keen and they’re exploring this one.

“He is an unrestricted free agent so the Lions will have to let him walk.

“The Dogs actually had interest in him after Luke Beveridge’s first season – the one they wanted was Ben McEvoy because they like the flexibility of playing back as well as being able to take a mark up forward.

“I think Martin plays for the Dogs next year.”

David Mundy

“Both parties are committed to each other (for 2021).

“The Dockers want to keep him and he wanted to stay, but the hold up was manoeuvring a few things around the salary cap.

“Now that Jesse Hogan goes out, Mundy will re-sign, and they’ll be able to give him what they believe he’s worth.

“I don’t think the Dockers' cap is extremely tight, it just helps that most of the Hogan contract is out the door.”
