Why GWS knocked back Geelong's two first round picks for Cameron

2020-11-10T07:16+11:00

Kane Cornes has provided an update on the state of play with the Jeremy Cameron trade.

It was reported yesterday that the Cats have put picks 15 and 20 on the table for the 2018 Coleman Medallist.

That offer was quickly rebuffed by the Giants and Cornes has revealed why.

“I know Jay Clark has been reporting in the Herald Sun, I think he said it was a very generous offer from Geelong towards the Giants, the Giants don’t see it that way,” Cornes told AFL Trade Radio.

“In fact, they would say the points value, we know that every draft has a points value, for example pick one is worth 3000 points. The Giants would say that the points value offered right now from Geelong is less than the compensation pick that they could have had in the first place if they’d let Jeremy Cameron walk.

“I did the numbers on it and the pick 10 compensation they would have got for Jeremy Cameron is 1395 points. We’re reading that Geelong put up picks 15 and 20. So pick 15 is 1112 and 20 is 912, so that equals 2024.

“So you’re thinking ‘they’re in front by about 600?’ I think what will happen is when the compensation bids come in on draft night, those picks will drop right back down and I’d imagine Geelong also wants something back (from the Giants).

“The Giants are now resigned to the fact that there won’t be a player involved. They did throw up Brandan Parfitt, that’s been rejected. The Cats put up some fringe players, but none of those interest the Giants, so they’re resolved to that fact.

“They keep telling the Giants that Cameron is 28 so they can’t expect similar compensation to Tim Kelly. The Giants are countering that by saying ‘you’re giving him $1 million over six years’.

“It’s going to be picks and I don’t believe there’ll be other clubs involved.”

Cameron’s manager Alex McDonald told SEN’s Dwayne’s World yesterday that the key forward will not be returning to GWS next year, even if the trade falls through.
