2020-11-11T17:46+11:00

Carlton defender Sam Docherty recently underwent surgery to remove a cancerous lump, the club confirmed on Wednesday.

The Blues co-captain is expected to make a full recovery.

Docherty said the initial diagnosis was a “shock”, but said he was grateful to hear a positive prognosis following surgery.

“Obviously hearing the initial diagnosis was a shock, however I feel grateful to have got onto it straight away," Docherty said in the statement.

“Having now had the surgery, I’m grateful to hear that I’m expected to make a full recovery and will be able to resume training in four to six weeks’ time.

Carlton Head of Football Brad Lloyd said the club will continue to support him through the recovery phase.

“The surgery went well and we’re incredibly pleased that it’s expected Sam will recover fully," he said.

“Obviously Sam’s health remains the Club’s number one priority and we will continue to support him throughout this time."
