Saints “have asked the question” of retired defender

St Kilda is exploring the possibility of luring James Frawley out of retirement.

AFL Trade Radio reporter Mitch Cleary says the Saints have spoken to Frawley about potentially playing on in 2021 in a bid to bolster the club's defensive stocks.

The 32-year-old was part of Hawthorn’s premiership in 2015 and played a total of 239 games for the Hawks and Melbourne.

“The Saints have asked the question,” Cleary told Trade Mornings on AFL Trade Radio.

“He’s got a relationship with Brett Ratten from his time when he was at Hawthorn and Jarryd Roughead, his premiership teammate.

“They’ve asked the question. The Saints have picked up the phone.

“Yes, they’ve agreed to a one-year deal for (Jake) Carlisle with the trigger for a second but they do want some depth down there.

“Nathan Brown went around for one more year and then retired, Oscar Clavarino is a young key defender who is without a contract, they delisted Logan Austin as well.

“There is a bit of room there to move in terms of another key defender.

“He’s proven and he played 14 of the 17 games this year and the Saints think that would be better than going to the draft and getting an untried 18-year-old as a back-up option.”

It’s been another busy trade period for the Saints who have secured the services of free agent Brad Crouch from Adelaide and delisted Essendon forward Shaun McKernan.

They’re also working on a deal to sign Richmond forward Jack Higgins ahead of Thursday night’s trade deadline.
