Rendell’s Trade Grades - GWS Giants

2020-11-23T10:54+11:00

Former AFL recruiter Matt Rendell has delivered his assessments of each of the 18 clubs and their performances in the recent Trade Period.

The Giants endured a tricky period with star forward Jeremy Cameron opting to leave while Zac Williams, Aidan Corr, Jye Caldwell, Zac Langdon and Jackson Hately also moved on.

Trade Grade: D-

Rendell says:
Not a good trade period for GWS with no end in sight for the revolving door of players wanting to leave. They lost six players, three of which were in their best 18, and two exciting youngsters who were only there for two years.

Free agency has got them, as they have so many highly paid players that it’s terribly hard to match offers. Although they did match Cameron, I think they always were going to trade him.

Received Jesse Hogan to fill a gap left by Cameron and Braydon Preuss to fill a desperate need in the ruck. With a bunch of draft selections, they will be a big player in both this year's and next year's drafts with swaps for picks before and on draft night.

Still have a gun top 25, so no need to panic, but must choose wisely on draft night. Can’t afford to have talented players walk out the door after two years.

Ins:
Jesse Hogan (from Fremantle)
Braydon Preuss (from Melbourne)

Outs:
Jeremy Cameron (to Geelong)
Zac Williams (to Carlton)
Aidan Corr (to North Melbourne)
Zac Langdon (to West Coast)
Jye Caldwell (to Essendon)
Jackson Hately (to Adelaide via Pre-Season Draft)

2020 draft hand:
10, 13, 15, 20, 44, 52, 74, 88

2020 season performance:
Wins: 8
Losses: 9
Position: 10th
