Melbourne Victory close to completing two new signings

2020-11-25T10:31+11:00

Melbourne Victory is close to completing two new signings, according to CEO Trent Jacobs.

Jacobs all but confirmed that a deal for a striker, likely to be Rudy Gestede, is imminent while a foreign central defender will also be added.

Former Stoke and Middlesbrough defender Ryan Shotton's name has been mentioned as the possible defensive acquisition.

“From Australian-based players to foreign players, it is a completely different new look team,” Jacobs told SEN’s Whateley.

“We’ve got two more signings to make – one is imminent.

“We will be signing and announcing a striker in the coming couple of days and we’ve got one central defender that we will sign who will be foreign, and that will round out our roster.

“Under the tutelage of Grant Brebner and a completely new look team around him, we’re really excited about what the season will bring, we think we’ll be incredibly competitive.”

Gestede has been linked with a move to the Victory since leaving Championship side Middlesbrough in June.

The 32-year-old marksman has previously played for Cardiff City, Aston Villa and Blackburn Rovers.

Victory were beaten 3-1 by Chinese club Beijing FC in their opening Asian Champions League match on Tuesday.

Brebner's side open their 2020/2021 A-League campaign against Brisbane Roar at AAMI Park on January 2.
