Why new assistant coach is a "big get" for Brisbane

2020-12-02T11:00+11:00

David King believes new Brisbane Lions assistant coach Mark Stone is a big get for the club.

Speaking on SEN Breakfast on Wednesday morning, King said the way Stone navigated a difficult 2020 as head coach of SANFL club Glenelg was particularly impressive.

“When he got the job at (SANFL club) Glenelg and footy got put on hold, they didn’t know for how long, he did mock game reviews for the Glenelg players and asked Robbo (Mark Robinson), Dermie (Dermott Brereton) and I to do little videos and the boys would do their own mock reviews of games they never played,” King said.

“I just thought that’s another hook for a guy to attach to his players, to sell a bit of a message, to have a bit of fun, that you don’t hear of normally.”

“That sort of stuff, thinking outside the box. I mean how many coaches in the SANFL this year would’ve had mock reviews of games? That’s the sort of level of intelligence you’re talking about with ‘Stoney’. Great fella, wants to have a laugh, create a great environment, and they go on and win the flag.”

Stone led Glenelg to a drought-breaking SANFL premiership in 2019 and will join Chris Fagan as ansenior assistant at the Lions.

“That’s a big get by Brisbane. Ok, they lose (David) Noble (to North Melbourne), and then they lose Danny Daly from a rigid coaching group that’s been the same for four years. They get an opportunity to go and get a star, they get Mark Stone,” King said.

“It’s a big win for Brisbane.”
