"He's got to lift": The talented draft prospect who must get tougher

2020-12-08T10:45+11:00

Former West Australian under-18 state side coach Peter Sumich has revealed why one highly touted draft prospect has slid in the build up to the draft.

Speaking on SEN Mornings on Monday, Sumich said Swan Districts midfielder Zane Trew has some attitude things he must work on.

“Look, I really like Zane. But I think he’s got to lift his game a bit,” Sumich said.

“His attitude towards football is great, but I think he gets the sooks a bit if things don’t go his way and I think that’s what the recruiters have seen.

“He needs to lift his game in that area. If things don’t go his way he needs to really knuckle down and get on with business.

Sumich said Trew, who entered the season as a possible top-10 prospect, can certainly play, and would have played more as a 17-year old in 2019 if not for injury.

“He was injured as a 17-year old through our carnival, and I would have played him,” Sumich said.

“He was touted top 10, top half a dozen. He has certainly drifted. He played Colts this year and played okay.

Sumich admitted he doesn’t like to be negative about draft prospects but stressed the importance of transparency with AFL recruiters.

“I don’t like to be negative of any kid. What I like to do is be honest,” Sumich said.

“It’s no good me telling you things that aren’t true.

“He can play, there’s no doubt about that. He’ll probably go in the top 20, 30 picks. But he’s got to change certain things with his attitude.”

Trew averaged 25 disposals in seven games for the Swans WAFL Colts side this season.
