Is it time for Collingwood to move to their next captain?

2020-12-08T13:57+11:00

Former Collingwood recruiter Matt Rendell believes his old side should hand the captaincy reins to Darcy Moore in 2021.

Scott Pendlebury has served as skipper since 2014 and is likely to remain in the role next season.

Rendell praised Pendlebury’s run as captain, but believes the time is right to make Moore the man in charge.

“He should be (Collingwood’s next captain). I would even do it next year,” Rendell told SEN’s Dwayne’s World.

“Pendlebury has been there a long while and he’s not going to be any different if he’s captain or not captain.

“But why wouldn’t you get Darcy in at 24, he’s just signed a two-year contract, he’s going to come out (of contract) in free agency.

“Why wouldn’t you hand (the captaincy) over. He’s a smart kid, he’s running the backline, he can play ruck, he can play forward.

“I’d be throwing him the keys and saying ‘Pendles you’ve been fantastic for us, but let’s get the new bunch of kids in’.

“I can’t see the sense in Steele Sidebottom or even Taylor Adams taking over. They’re going to be the same. It might even elevate Darcy to be a better player if that’s possible.

“And he has got a lot of empathy too, Darcy. He does communicate well with the players and speaks well and I think he’d be great.”

Moore re-signed with Collingwood this year, committing to the end of 2022.
