Why Cameron Smith “has to keep going” in 2021: Voss

2020-12-10T07:45+11:00

The Rugby League world was again sent into a tailspin about Cameron Smith’s future, after Melbourne Storm part-owner Gerry Ryan told SEN Track’s Andrew Bensley that he believed Smith “had played his last game in Melbourne”, pointing to his retirement.

Following the statement, many believe this weekend we will receive official confirmation of the future Immortal’s 2021 plans.

While some have grown tired of the constant chatter around Smith’s future, 1170 SEN’s Andrew Voss has not, and in fact he wishes for the Storm leader to play one final season in 2021.

“We could be just days away from finding out the plans of Cameron Smith,” Voss said on 1170 SEN Breakfast.

“Finally, the games and points record holder, for many, the GOAT (greatest of all-time).

“The news out of yesterday, Smith moving to Queensland and set to retire.

“That was according to Melbourne Storm part owner and director Gerry Ryan speaking to Andrew Bensley on the SENTrack network.

“He thinks Cameron has realised it’s time to hang the boots up.

“We’re told Storm chairman Matt Tripp is expected to travel to Queensland this weekend to meet with Smith, discuss his future, and a potential role with the Storm if he opts to retire.

“I keep hearing fans are tiring of the wait, to the point where perhaps they’re past caring.

“Well, I’m not one of those, I’m a rugby league fan first and foremost, more so than a rugby league commentator.

“I am a fan, and Cameron Smith is as good a player as I’ve ever seen.

“His form makes him still one of the very best in the NRL, and in my opinion, he has to keep going.

Storm coach Craig Bellamy has already confirmed that next season will be his last, and Voss envisages a scenario where the two greats retire together.

“The Melbourne Storm and the NRL will be poorer without him," Voss added.

“I believe, that Cameron Smith may have done a pact with Craig Bellamy.

“I stand by this, Craig Bellamy has gone on record already, next year is his last as the Melbourne Storm coach.

“I see a romantic shot, of the great coach Craig Bellamy, finishing at the same time as the great player, Cameron Smith.

“The only coach Smith has ever had in first-grade is Craig Bellamy, and they have an opportunity, to go out together.

“At the end of 2021, we will say farewell to an incredible duo, Bellamy and Cameron Smith.”
