How close did Josh Kennedy come to hanging up the boots in 2020?

2021-01-15T08:39+11:00

West Coast star Josh Kennedy isn’t yet ready for a retirement parade and would contemplate playing on in 2022, pending how 2021 plays out.

Kennedy has played 260 career games and kicked 645 goals across a 16-year career with Carlton and the Eagles.

While he admits there were stages in 2020 where he contemplated hanging up the boots, the 33-year-old hasn’t ruled out going on beyond this season.

“You get towards the back-end of your career and daily it changes. ‘Is this my last year, nup, I want to play another year’,” Kennedy told Sportsday WA.

“Trevor Nisbett (Eagles CEO) is pretty good at saying never put an end date on your career because if you do that’s when it’ll end.

“I’m pretty open to continuing on and to keep playing.

“There were a few moments last season, particularly in the middle of the season and that last home game when I knew we were going away for the second hub, I had to take a moment to look around the ground and the stands and that it could be potentially my last game at Optus Stadium.

“Those moments will probably pop up again this year, but there’s no end date in my head so I’ll just keep doing what I’m doing and if I can help the team and if we want to go another year and the team is happy, probably push through, but we’ll see how it all pans out.”

West Coast hosts St Kilda and Fremantle in the upcoming AAMI Community Series, before taking on Gold Coast in Round 1.
