Pant and Pujara see wounded India home to claim incredible Test Series

India has pulled off a remarkable win in Brisbane to claim the Test Series against Australia.

It is Australia’s first Test loss at the Gabba since 1988.

Pant was the hero for the second straight Test, surviving early before blasting the touring side home in the final hour.

Gill (91 off 146) and Pujara (56 off 211) set up the innings, blunting the Australian attack.

For the second Test in a row, the Aussies did not look like taking 20 wickets, with only Pat Cummins doing damage in the second innings.

Cummins took four wickets, including Sharma, Pujara, Rahane and Agarwal and bowled himself into the ground in the session after the new ball was taken.

Australia set 369 in a rain-affected first innings, with rear-guard support seeing India respond with 336.

The Aussies made another 294, batting a little longer than expected in the hopes of ensuring India could not chase them down … and yet it wasn’t enough.

Lyon took the wicket of Washington Sundar with 25 balls left in the day, Hazlewood dismissed Shardul with 21 remaining, but with less than 10 runs required, it was far too little, too late.

The win ensures the Border-Gavaskar trophy comes home with the Indians, thanks to their heroics in Melbourne and Sydney.

Only two Indian players played all four Tests – Pujara and Rahane – and yet they got the job done when it mattered most.

The Australian side will have serious questions asked of it – including the futures of Mitchell Starc and Nathan Lyon, both of whom offered little on day five.

The Australian Test team now takes a break to regroup before heading over for a tour of South Africa in February.
