Callum Mills outlines Sydney's blueprint for improvement in 2021

2021-01-23T08:30+11:00

Sydney Swans defender Callum Mills says the club is targeting an improvement in attack and ball movement as they look to bounce back from a disappointing 2020 campaign.

The Swans finished 16th on the ladder last season, winning just five matches in a transitional year for the club as coach John Longmire opted to prioritise youth.

After an extensive post-season review, Mills said the playing group were clear in the areas they had to improve in before the 2021 season begins.

“The coaches have done a really good job in terms of a post-season review,” he said on SEN 1170 Summer Afternoons.

“They’ve found areas that need to be worked out, our strengths and what will need to get us back into the eight because that’s what we’re striving for.

“They’ve broken them down into different areas and we’ve implemented them across the pre-season.

“It’s important that we don’t purely focus on the few areas we weren’t great during last season; we also need to focus on our defence and that’s what held strong for us and be able to tinker our offence.

“If you’re scoring goals, it’s much easier to defend when the ball is in our hands and there’s a few things like that we are tinkering.

“Different things with our ball movement and offensively, different avenues to score and being more efficient and working together more (is what we're working on).

“There’s a few principles that have been put in to place and hopefully that will help.”

Sydney has finished outside the eight for consecutive seasons, having not missed finals from 2009 to 2018 prior to that.
