Warne's assessment of every Stars player after failed BBL season

2021-01-27T10:23+11:00

The Melbourne Stars have missed the BBL finals for just the second time in their 10-year history, losing to the Sydney Sixers in a must-win match at the MCG on Tuesday night.

Requiring a maximum four points to make the finals, the Stars failed to claim the all-important bash boost point before eventually going down by five wickets with one ball to spare.

For a team boasting the likes of Glenn Maxwell, Marcus Stoinis and Adam Zampa – all who are white-ball internationals for Australia – it’s another lost opportunity for the Stars who are still without a BBL title.

Former Stars captain and cricket great Shane Warne was left baffled by his former club's failure to make the finals and delivered his assessment of every Stars player’s performances throughout BBL|10.

“For the team they had, there’s something wrong,” Warne told Fox Cricket.

"If you look down, there's Stoinis. How's he done? He's had some good games but should have done better. Had plenty of opportunities, got a few 20s but didn't really get that big one.

"Seb Gotch - they'll be looking at that wicketkeeper-batsman role. Nick Larkin I think has been fantastic. He's been the standout for them.

"Glenn Maxwell hasn't done enough but has been fantastic in some games. Nic Maddinson - he's had an average year as well. He's better than what he's done.

"Hilton Cartwright - he's just come good at the end. He's better than what he showed before that. (Nathan) Coulter-Nile - I think they'll be looking at his spot and whether they'll need him in the squad or not.

"(Sam) Rainbird - he's done okay with limited chances. (Adam) Zampa - we know what quality he is. I think (Billy) Stanlake's done well at times.

"Zahir Khan's been good and a few of the others have been okay.

"So if you look through that there haven't been too many players who have had an outstanding season."

It’s the first time in Big Bash history that both Melbourne clubs failed to make the finals.
