Steve Smith admits it would be "tough" for Pat Cummins to captain Australia

Is Pat Cummins the man to replace Tim Paine as Test captain of Australia when the mantle is eventually passed?

Cummins serves as the vice-captain currently, but questions have been asked as to whether a fast bowler can also balance the responsibilities that comes with captaincy.

Former Australian captain Steve Smith admits it would be quite the challenge for the big quick.

“I think being a fast bowler, it would be tough, but that’s not really for me to decide,” Smith told SEN Breakfast.

“That’s probably a question for him so we’ll wait and see.”

Smith himself remains open to captaining the Test side again, but won’t force anyone’s hand.

“I’ve said I’m pretty comfortable where I’m at at the moment.”

“When and if that time comes and if I’m the right person when that time comes, then yes, but we’ll wait and see, those guys are doing great jobs at the moment.”

Smith was crowned the Allan Border Medallist on the weekend, the highest individual honour in Australian men’s cricket.

He admits he was surprised when his name was called out.

“I don’t really play for these personal accolades. I play because I love it and do what I can for the team, but nice to get an award voted by your peers at the same time,” he said.

“I certainly wasn’t expecting this one, I probably only got the votes in one Test of the summer and it’s normally quite heavily weighted towards Test cricket, so I wasn’t expecting it, but there you go, move on.”

It was Smith’s third Allan Border Medal, with Cummins finishing second and Aaron Finch in third.
