St Kilda coach Brett Ratten says recruit James Frawley has a “point to prove” after being lured out of retirement.
Frawley joined the Saints just six weeks after hanging up the boots with Hawthorn at the conclusion of the 2020 season.
“He (Frawley) thinks he still has a year or two left in his body,” Ratten told SEN Breakfast.
“We’ve tried to manage him and look after him, but he’s done most of the work and he’s been going really well.
“Like anybody at that time in their career, they probably have got a point to prove because the ends pretty close and they want to prove people wrong.
“He’s a proud man and I think he’s going to put his best foot forward.”
Ratten explained how the club successfully persuaded the 32-year-old out of retirement and back on an AFL list.
“It was probably where we thought we needed more support and somebody that could come in and play straight away and still have a fair bit of footy to offer, we thought,” Ratten said.
“We spoke about it at list management, it was thrown around.
“There was a bit of tongue in cheek, he’s good friends with ‘Rough’ (Jarryd Roughead) and Dean Kent, so he was on the phone and I said to him post-season, ‘I might give you a call in a few weeks, we might have a chat’, he laughed and said, ‘Whatever, I’ll talk to you later’.
“We had a chat, and everything grew from there. He’s fit in really well and is a quality person as well.”
Frawley, the nephew of late St Kilda great Danny Frawley, played 14 games for Hawthorn last season, taking his career tally to 239 across 14 seasons with the Hawks and Demons.
