How Brad Scott played a role in recruitment of new Saint

2021-02-26T19:16+11:00

New St Kilda recruit Mason Wood has revealed the circumstances which saw him land at Moorabbin just four months after departing North Melbourne.

The 27-year-old was picked up by the Saints as a supplementary selection player after his delisting at the Roos at the end of the 2020 season, where he played 65 games in seven seasons.

He starred for St Kilda against his old side in a scratch match at Arden Street on Thursday, booting four games in their monster 91-point win.

Wood said it was former North Melbourne coach Brad Scott who St Kilda called for a reference before deciding to offer him a second chance.

“Initially my manager messaged to say that the Saints were keen (to offer me a chance to train),” he said on Sportsday.

“(Chief Operating Officer) Simon Lethlean leant on (former North Melbourne coach) Brad Scott a little bit, who said I just needed a second chance and that’s all it was.

“They were already keen and knew I had something to offer, it just went from there and then St Kilda’s list manager (James Gallagher) messaged me, 10 days later I was training and three weeks after that I was on the list.

“It all happened really, really quickly.”

Wood will continue to press his claim for a Round 1 spot during St Kilda’s AAMI Community Series clash against Carlton next Thursday night.
