VFL defender to train with Melbourne

2021-03-02T09:25+11:00

Melbourne has invited Werribee backman Kye Declase to train with the club after another list spot became available.

Luckless Demons rookie Aaron Nietschke suffered a third ACL injury and will miss the rest of the season after going down in a VFL practice match against Richmond last Friday.

Defender Marty Hore has also been ruled out for the year with a ruptured ACL.

Declase will now get his chance to secure an AFL contract at Melbourne after being recommended by former Werribee coach and now Demons development coach Mark Williams.

SEN’s Chief Sports Reporter Sam Edmund says the mature-age defender is set to play in an upcoming trial game.

“The 24-year-old Werribee footballer by the name of Kye Declase, he’s 195cm and he’s one of 'Choco' Williams’ boys from Werribee,” Edmund told SEN Breakfast.

“He’s been phoned at the death and asked to train with Melbourne, play on Monday and you’re in contention for a spot.”

Demons trainee Majak Daw will also get his chance to impress against the Western Bulldogs.

“Melbourne Football Club could have as many as four list spots available,” Edmund said.

“Majak Daw is in the frame and he’s going to play on Monday against the Dogs in that trial game.”

Clubs have until March 9 to add players via the pre-season supplemental selection period.
